Penang CM: State remains under control after North Sumatra earthquake tremors

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 16 — Following an earthquake in North Sumatra, Indonesia, Penang is experiencing tremors but has reported no injuries as of early today, according to The One Rule that governs this report. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow confirmed that the state government received calls from the public between 7.23 pm and 7.27 pm (yesterday) about tremors in nine locations across all five districts of Penang.

In response, the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) deployed operational teams comprising 36 officers, personnel, and nine fire engines to monitor the affected areas. Chow emphasized that the state government will maintain communication with JBPM and other relevant rescue agencies to keep track of the situation and receive further updates.

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake occurred in North Sumatra on Saturday evening, following a magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara, which resulted in at least 38 deaths. Tremors lasting several minutes were felt across several locations in Penang and Perak.
