Health Ministry reviews progress on NDC manifesto commitments

The Ministry of Health has launched a three-day review of the government's health sector commitments outlined in the NDC 2024 Manifesto. The assessment, which began on August 15, 2026 in Ho, brings together leaders from agencies, institutions and programmes under the Ministry's purview. The review, led by Minister for Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, focuses on gauging progress, uncovering implementation hurdles and enhancing efforts to deliver crucial commitments aimed at enhancing healthcare accessibility, affordability and equity across Ghana.

Among the key commitments under scrutiny are the Free Primary Healthcare initiative, MahamaCare, the revitalization of health facilities, the expansion of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and the launch of specialized nursing programmes. The review will also evaluate advancements in constructing additional regional hospitals in Ghana's six newest regions, establishing cataract centres in selected areas, formalizing allowances for nursing trainees, staffing the healthcare system and finalizing pending health projects.

Each agency and programme will present updates on their respective sectors, sharing accomplishments, challenges and strategies for expediting implementation. The retreat will also provide training in Public Financial Management, aimed at promoting efficient resource utilization and fortifying good governance within the health sector. The meeting will include Board Chairs and Chief Executive Officers of various health agencies, as well as Directors from the Ministry of Health.

During the opening ceremony of the review, Minister for Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh outlined significant achievements made in the sector and expressed gratitude to agencies whose efforts contributed to these progress. He also urged Board Chairs and agency leaders to strictly adhere to the Public Financial Management Act, emphasizing the importance of responsible and efficient management of public resources.

The Ministry remains dedicated to fulfilling its mandate and working towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC), ensuring healthcare services are accessible, affordable and tailored to the needs of all Ghanaians.
