Camron Harris Identified as Virginia State Shooting Suspect

On Saturday, a 19-year-old man named Camron Harris was arrested in connection with a shooting at Virginia State University (VSU) that left five individuals injured and prompted the campus to go into lockdown. Found hiding in a dormitory closet on the VSU campus by police at 4 p.m. local time, Harris was identified as the suspect.

He is not a VSU student, nor were four of the five wounded individuals, who are aged between 17 and 23. Only one victim, a 20-year-old student, was released from the hospital following the incident.

Police obtained eight felony warrants against Harris, including charges of malicious wounding and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. However, they have not disclosed the possible motive behind the shooting. Harris was taken to Chesterfield County Jail, where he remains in custody without bond.

The shooting occurred around 1:28 a.m. on Saturday at the 3300 block of Boisseau Street, where law enforcement found five individuals suffering from gunshot wounds outside the university dorms. They were transported to local hospitals for treatment. One of the wounded individuals, who is not a VSU student, is in critical condition, while the VSU student who sustained non-life-threatening injuries has since been released from the hospital.

The university, which has over 5,000 students, was placed on lockdown following the shooting, but this lockdown has since been lifted. VSU continues to cooperate with law enforcement and has stated that an increased police presence will remain on campus as the investigation progresses. This shooting is not the first instance of serious gun violence associated with VSU; in November 2023, a university police officer was critically injured while responding to a disturbance near campus, leading to a lockdown and a multi-agency investigation.
