South Korea proposes talks to officially end war with North

South Korea's President Jae Myung has proposed talks with North Korea to officially end the ongoing conflict between the two nations. The armistice signed in 1953 has effectively frozen the war, but tensions and clashes have persisted along the demilitarized zone (DMZ) and accusations of provocations have been exchanged. Lee has expressed hope for face-to-face discussions between the nations to achieve peaceful coexistence and mutual growth, with a focus on halting North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

North Korea has continued to test ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads, which has been seen as an attempt to intimidate and project power. The conflict has been ongoing since 1953, with occasional clashes and accusations of provocations from both sides. Lee, who assumed office last year after his predecessor was impeached, has sought to improve relations with North Korea and China, which had soured under his predecessor.

North Korea declared itself a nuclear power in 2022 and has vowed never to relinquish its weapons, with an estimated arsenal of dozens of warheads. North Korea has yet to respond to Lee's proposal, with its state news agency reporting on Kim marking his country's Liberation Day with a wreath-laying and guard of honor. North Korea has previously dismissed Lee's offers of engagement, criticizing a US plan to build South Korea a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines and denouncing joint military drills between the two allies.

North Korea recently fired a ballistic missile into the sea, marking the 11th suspected test this year, just days before a scheduled US-South Korean joint military exercise.
