South Korea president proposes talks with North to end Korean War

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has proposed formal talks with North Korea to formally end the Korean War, which has been ongoing since 1953 following an armistice rather than a peace treaty. This comes as North Korea strengthens its ties with Russia and asserts its status as a "irreversible" nuclear state. The President made the proposal during a ceremony marking Korea's liberation from Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule.

He emphasized the importance of ending the long-standing war and discussing measures to stop the advancement of North Korea's nuclear capabilities. North Korea has recently expressed discontent over US-South Korean military drills and fired two missiles after Japan pledged to enhance its defence capabilities. Since its 2019 summit with US President Donald Trump fell through, North Korea has consistently maintained its nuclear status.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, a more conciliatory leader compared to his predecessor, has offered to engage with nuclear-armed North Korea without preconditions. However, North Korea's top court upheld a seven-year jail term for South Korea's former president. Despite North Korea's response to Lee's offers, analysts suggest that the hermetic regime receives financial aid, food, energy, and military technology from Russia while supplying troops and munitions for Russia's war in Ukraine.

A visit from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to Russia is anticipated later this year, possibly to discuss further arms support for Moscow. Washington, as South Korea's key security ally, deploys around 28,500 troops to bolster the country's defenses against potential threats from Pyongyang.
