What would a North Korean troop surge mean for Ukraine war?

North Korea is preparing a significant troop deployment to assist Russia in its conflict with Ukraine, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy stated that between 30,000 and 50,000 North Korean soldiers could be sent to Russia by the end of November, primarily to bolster Russian forces in the Kursk, Bryansk, and Belgorod regions.

This would free up Russian troops for the Ukrainian front. Ukraine has expressed concern over the potential surge in North Korean troops, urging South Korea to strengthen cooperation on air defense and drones. Russia and North Korea signed a defense pact in 2024, with North Korea sending some 14,000 to 15,000 troops to Russia, mainly to the Kursk region.

Additional 6,000 North Korean sappers and military construction workers have been dispatched. North Korean troops have also supplied Russia with millions of artillery rounds and ballistic missiles. Analysts believe that North Korean soldiers have suffered heavy casualties, with estimates of 2,000 killed out of 6,000. Some believe that a deployment of 50,000 North Korean troops is militarily feasible, and that elite special operations forces would be among those deployed.
