Over 60,000 invasive myna birds captured since project launch

The National Project for Reducing and Controlling the Population of the Invasive Myna Bird in Qatar has achieved significant success, capturing over 60,000 of the invasive species since its launch, according to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change's Wildlife Development Department. Between January and July 2026, the project recorded 12,844 captured myna birds, bringing the cumulative total to 61,999 since its inception.

To enhance its efforts, the campaign has expanded to 58 locations, deploying 849 cages to bolster monitoring and control operations. These additional cages and broader geographical coverage aim to strengthen targeted control measures and improve the efficiency of population management. The Ministry remains committed to a carefully planned program aimed at limiting the spread of the invasive myna bird, protecting native species and biodiversity, and preserving the natural ecological balance.

The invasive myna bird poses a threat by competing with native species for food and nesting sites, potentially impacting local plants and birds and disrupting the overall ecological equilibrium. Despite these challenges, the Wildlife Development Department continues to execute monitoring and control operations while further expanding the distribution of cages in strategic locations.
