Morocco detains dozens of migrants trying to cross into Ceuta, reports say

Moroccan authorities have intercepted over 100 migrants attempting to cross into Ceuta, a Spanish exclave on the North African coast, according to Spanish media and Reuters. The migrants, predominantly from sub-Saharan Africa, were detained near the border town of Fnideq, located approximately 3km from the border. Moroccan security forces, some in riot gear, used tear gas to disperse the groups on nearby hills.

Earlier this week, Morocco's government warned it would prosecute those organizing and participating in the mass crossing, which they claimed was being incited by false social media posts. The crisis, which followed a significant influx of migrants two weeks prior, has led to increased security measures in the area, including the deployment of army officers, navy speedboats, and drones by Moroccan authorities.

Spain has also bolstered its security presence, with over 1,500 officers patrolling the region and installing a metal fence and floating barrier. Tensions have arisen between EU nations, with Italy imposing border controls and suspending the Schengen agreement in response to the influx. Spain has denied these actions, stating that Fneta is not part of the Schengen area and that the migrants were not entering the Spanish mainland.
