MECC: 12,844 invasive Myna birds captured since January

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) in Qatar has captured a total of 12,844 invasive Myna birds since January, part of a national project aimed at controlling the species' population and minimizing its impact on the country's ecosystems and biodiversity. This brings the cumulative number of captured Myna birds since the project's inception to 61,999.

The ministry highlighted that the control efforts have been expanded geographically, with 849 traps now deployed across 58 locations to enhance monitoring and control of the bird population in specific areas. MECC pledged its ongoing commitment to this initiative, which seeks to limit the spread of the invasive Myna bird, protect native species and biodiversity, and maintain the natural balance of ecosystems.

The Myna bird, being non-native, can exert pressure on native wildlife by competing for food and nesting resources, potentially affecting native plants, birds, and the overall ecological equilibrium.
