Otumfuo calls for urgent action to end maternal deaths in Ghana

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged for immediate action to curb maternal mortality in Ghana, deeming the loss of women during childbirth unacceptable in the modern era. He expressed these sentiments during a meeting with Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Grace Ayensu Danquah, at Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, as part of her tour to promote maternal healthcare in the Ashanti Region.

The meeting aimed to collaborate with key stakeholders on strategies to enhance maternal healthcare delivery and swiftly reduce preventable maternal deaths. Otumfuo lauded the Deputy Minister for her contributions to the Maternal Mortality Action and Response Programme (M-MARP) and advocated for heightened commitment and professionalism from health workers in providing maternal care.

He emphasized the need for healthcare providers to prevent avoidable maternal deaths through diligence. Additionally, the Asantehene advised expectant mothers to frequent antenatal clinics and adhere to medical guidance, as timely access to professional care can help detect and manage complications before they become fatal. He urged the Deputy Minister to prioritize the M-MARP initiative, recognizing its significance in Ghana's strategy to minimize maternal deaths.
