Otumfuo calls for urgent action to end maternal deaths in Ghana

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged for immediate and practical steps to decrease maternal deaths in Ghana, deeming the loss of women during childbirth unacceptable in the 21st century. He expressed this sentiment during a meeting with Deputy Minister for Health, Dr Grace Ayensu Danquah, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, as part of her official tour of the Ashanti Region.

This encounter was aimed at collaborating with key stakeholders to enhance maternal healthcare delivery and hasten the decrease of preventable maternal deaths.

Otumfuo acknowledged Dr Danquah's efforts under the Maternal Mortality Action and Response Programme (M-MARP) and welcomed the partnership between the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service in addressing maternal mortality. He asserted that it is inexcusable for women to attend health facilities for childbirth and still not return home alive.

Consequently, he appealed to doctors, nurses, and other frontline health workers to show dedication and professionalism in delivering maternal healthcare. He cautioned against negligence and urged health professionals to take all necessary measures to prevent avoidable maternal deaths.

Furthermore, Otumfuo recommended pregnant women to regularly attend antenatal clinics and follow medical advice. He pointed out that prompt access to antenatal care and skilled healthcare can aid in identifying and managing complications before they turn into life-threatening situations. He further urged the Deputy Minister to quickly implement the M-MARP initiative, describing it as a crucial step in the country's efforts to reduce maternal deaths.

Dr Ayensu Danquah is currently in the Ashanti Region as part of her tour to meet with health facilities and stakeholders to discuss ways to bolster maternal healthcare services and improve outcomes for mothers and newborns.
