Freedom Finds A New Meaning In Dharavi

Dharavi, a densely populated area in Mumbai, India, is undergoing a massive redevelopment project aimed at improving the lives of over 10 lakh residents. This transformation goes beyond physical construction, focusing on livelihoods, education, health, public spaces, and creating opportunities for future generations. The Dharavi Social Mission, a key component of the project, has seen thousands of residents enroll in skill development programs, entrepreneurship initiatives, and access to essential services.

Families are voluntarily relocating to make way for construction, anticipating the promise of better living conditions. The redevelopment is shaping up as a mixed-use, self-sustaining neighbourhood with homes, workplaces, shops, schools, hospitals, public transport, parks, and community facilities co-existing harmoniously. Internationally recognized firms are leading the planning, architecture, engineering, and urban design of the rehabilitation buildings and the new township.

Technology is also playing a significant role, with a comprehensive Digital Twin of Dharavi and an AI assistant, Dharavi Didi, providing residents with verified information in their preferred language. Environmental restoration efforts include planting 40,000 trees within Dharavi and rejuvenating the Mithi river, adhering to Water Sensitive Urban Design principles.

This holistic approach aims to create a greener, cleaner, and healthier Dharavi, enhancing the lives of residents for generations to come.
