CM Devendra Fadnavis: Dharavi Redevelopment To Be Modelled On Singapore And Hong Kong

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the Dharavi Redevelopment Project will deliver approximately 10,000 rehabilitation homes in the initial phase, marking a significant step in Maharashtra's urban renewal initiative. The project aims to provide free in-situ rehabilitation to eligible residents while enhancing civic infrastructure and establishing a framework for planned redevelopment across Mumbai.

Fadnavis highlighted that the transformation of Dharavi will be influenced by global cities such as Singapore and Hong Kong, while maintaining its distinctive live-work culture and economic vibrancy. Those eligible for relocation will receive new homes within Dharavi to maintain proximity to their workplaces, businesses, and established communities.

For those unable to be accommodated within Dharavi, suitable land has been identified in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region for their rehabilitation.

The project has transitioned into the execution stage, with notices issued to residents in Sector 6, located on Railway land, to finalize agreements and prepare for relocation. Construction is anticipated to commence after the monsoon. Families moving from their homes will have the option of transit accommodation or monthly rent assistance until their permanent residences are ready, ensuring they are supported during the transition process.

Fadnavis emphasized that the Dharavi Redevelopment Project will serve as a model for 19 additional cluster redevelopment projects planned throughout Mumbai.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stated that the Dharavi redevelopment is about more than just rebuilding homes; it represents a substantial step towards inclusive and planned development in Mumbai. The project aims to offer Dharavi residents modern, safe, and dignified living conditions while contributing to a stronger infrastructure for the city.

Sunetra Pawar, another Deputy Chief Minister, echoed similar sentiments, asserting that true development in Dharavi means positively impacting the lives of every family. The redevelopment will feature modern and safe homes, improved amenities, employment opportunities, and new avenues for progress, benefiting all residents, including women. Fadnavis and Pawar emphasized that placing the aspirations of Dharavi's residents at the core of this transformation is the true path to development.
