Before Killing Her Kids, Lindsay Clancy Searched About Hallucinations, Psychosis

In the weeks leading up to the tragic killing of her three children in January 2023, Lindsay Clancy searched online for information about hallucinations, psychosis, and side effects of various medications she was prescribed. The 36-year-old labor and delivery nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital also looked up suicide methods, bipolar disorder, and insomnia at the end of December 2022 and again in January.

A detailed note dated October 2022 revealed her doubts about her parenting choices and second-guessing her decision to stop breastfeeding her 8-month-old.

Defending her actions, Lindsay's attorneys argue that she suffered from bipolar disorder and postpartum psychosis, a rare condition that can distort a woman's sense of reality after childbirth. Forensic psychiatrist diagnosed her with these conditions following the killings. In her note, she expressed her fear of harming her youngest child and feeling overwhelmed by the amount of parenting information she had consumed over the past five years.

During the trial, her husband, Patrick Clancy, expressed his support for Lindsay, and they were seen together in texts discussing their parenting routines. Prosecutors argue that Lindsay intentionally killed her children by getting her husband to leave the house and then strangling them with exercise bands. They also point to her search for information on suicide methods and postpartum depression as evidence of premeditation.

If convicted of murder, Lindsay Clancy faces life in prison without parole. If found not guilty by reason of insanity, she would be committed to a state mental health facility.
