‘Some worked as gunners’: From carrying rifles to walking the ramp, surrendered Naxal women from Sukma tell their story

Nine women, formerly part of the Naxalite movement in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh, recently surrendered and participated in a fashion show during the National Handloom Day event in Raipur. The show aimed to help rehabilitate former Naxalites by providing them opportunities to engage in activities outside their previous lives. The women donned traditional heirloom sarees, accessorized with silver waist belts, jhumkas, and boots, while also promoting Swadeshi products.

Mayank Gurjar, Superintendent of Police (SP) in Sukma, explained that the women previously held various roles within the Naxal organisation. Some worked in the Pamed Area Committee, while others served as gunners for major Naxalite commanders in Battalion Number 1. One woman even worked as a teacher in a school. The training program in Raipur lasted for six days and included instruction from former ministers. The women expressed enjoyment and enthusiasm about the experience.

According to Gurjar, the nine women's participation in the fashion show represents a change in their outlook and increased trust in the government's rehabilitation policies. They are actively promoting Swadeshi products and honing their artistic skills. This development signifies a successful rehabilitation of former Naxalites and their integration into society as productive citizens.
