German runner calls for ‘more respect’ after seeing online racial abuse of teammates

BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — German middle-distance athlete Smilla Kolbe has strongly criticized the online racial abuse hurled at some of her fellow competitors during the European championships. The 24-year-old, who is white, addressed the issue on Thursday following her 800 meters semifinal heat at Alexander Stadium.

"Let me make one thing clear," Kolbe began, speaking to German broadcaster ZDF. "I’ve read numerous comments, and I’m grateful for the support we’re receiving. However, I have witnessed some truly appalling comments directed at certain athletes, and I believe we should demand a higher standard of respect. I’m proud that we’re representing Germany and garnering support from all viewers, but I can’t fathom what it would be like if I weren’t white."

Kolbe, a former University of North Florida athlete, concluded sixth in her heat and failed to qualify for Thursday night’s final. "It’s crucial that I say this," she emphasized, "and I urge everyone watching to extend the respect that our athletes deserve."
