Why has diesel become more expensive than gasoline?

Fuel prices continue their escalation, with diesel leading the way. This fuel has exceeded €1.82 per liter, chaining a month and a half of consecutive increases, while gasoline has crossed the threshold of €1.70, according to the latest data from the European Union's oil bulletin. The increase in diesel fuel has triggered the activation of the safeguard clause of the anti-crisis shield in September to raise the tax rebate for this fuel to 20 cents per liter, compared to the initially planned 5 cents.

The measure is being implemented because the price of diesel has risen by more than 15% year-on-year, while gasoline will follow the established calendar because its cost increased by 7.3% annually. The experts consulted attribute this difference in price evolution to the higher demand for diesel in Spain, but above all to the tensions in the energy markets caused by the wars in Ukraine and Iran.
