N Korea warn of new 'deterrent' ahead of US-South drills

North Korea has issued a warning that it could employ a more intense form of deterrent in response to upcoming joint US-South Korea military exercises. These 11-day drills, which occur annually, are designed to prepare the US and South Korea for defending against the nuclear-armed North. Recently, North Korea test-fired a ballistic missile over the Sea of Japan, expressing its opposition to the exercises.

This year's drills, however, will incorporate modern combat skills learned during the Russia-Ukraine war, such as drone and cyber-attack capabilities. The US claims the new exercises are distinct from previous ones and aim to enhance the ability to fight modern warfare. North Korea's Foreign Ministry, in a statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency, emphasized their consistent principle of responding to new threats with increased deterrence.

Analysts note that North Korea's ally, Russia, has deployed troops to Ukraine in its ongoing war, and the North may have acquired military technology and combat expertise from this conflict. This has altered the threat posed to the Korean peninsula, according to US and South Korean Combined Forces Command spokesman Colonel Ryan Donald.

The Ulchi Freedom Shield drills will involve 18,000 South Korean troops and 28,500 US troops. Despite North Korea's threats of escalation, a senior researcher at the Korea Institute for National Unification described the statement as comparatively restrained and potentially open to future engagement with Washington. North Korea has long maintained its status as an "irreversible nuclear state" since the collapse of its 2019 summit with US President Donald Trump.

Recently, the country has expressed concern over Japan's military build-up and has fired two missiles in response to Tokyo's increased defense capabilities. However, some experts speculate that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un might seek a meeting with Trump, potentially following the US midterm elections.
