Luigi Mangione admits killing insurance CEO, pleads guilty in federal case

Luigi Mangione admitted in court on Friday that he killed health insurance executive Brian Thompson and pleaded guilty to two federal charges of stalking the CEO with the intent to kill him. Mangione shot Thompson in Manhattan and he died, according to Mangione. Thompson's widow and family attended the hearing, visibly shaken. The guilty plea will avoid a federal trial over the killing, which was condemned by public officials but highlighted American frustration with health insurance practices.

Mangione's lawyer filed a motion to dismiss separate state murder charges, arguing against double jeopardy under New York law. U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett stated that Mangione could face life in prison on each count and sentenced him for December 18. Manhattan U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald said his office would seek a life sentence.

Thompson's family expressed hope for justice and that the plea marked an important step. Mangione claimed he sought information about a healthcare conference to criticize the US health insurance system, then made a gun part and traveled to kill Thompson. UnitedHealth Group expressed relief the murderer was caught. Initially, Mangione pleaded not guilty to federal charges in April 2025, which were later dismissed for legal reasons, ending the threat of the death penalty.

He also pleaded not guilty to state charges in December 2024, including terrorism, murder, weapons, and forgery, but those were thrown out by a judge in September 2025. A trial date in the state case is set for September 8. If convicted, Mangione could receive 25 years to life in prison for second-degree murder. His lawyers argue the double jeopardy motion could violate his Fifth Amendment rights, while prosecutors claim it's a different statute and splitting hairs.
