Luigi Mangione admits killing UnitedHealthcare CEO

On December 4, 2024, UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot outside a New York City hotel during an investor conference. Luigi Mangione, 28, has pleaded guilty to the murder and two charges of stalking with intent to kill. The deadly crime, which drew widespread condemnation, has become emblematic of public frustration with health insurance practices.

Mangione told the court that he researched the conference details after suffering a broken back and navigating the health insurance system. He then allegedly used a 3D printer to create part of a gun and traveled to New York with the intent to kill Thompson. His wife, Paulette, attended the court hearing alongside other family members.

The guilty plea will avert a federal trial and allow Mangione to seek dismissal of state murder charges. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison for each federal count, with a December 18 sentencing date set. Thompson's family expressed hope that the plea would lead to justice, emphasizing the need for a sentencing that reflects the gravity of the crime.

Mangione's defense lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, stated there was no plea agreement with prosecutors. Meanwhile, Mangione's separate state terrorism, murder, weapons, and forgery charges face a trial scheduled for September 8 before Justice Gregory Carro.
