Timeline of Luigi Mangione's Criminal Cases in the Killing of UnitedHealthcare's CEO

On December 4, 2024, UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed outside a New York City hotel while on his way to the company's annual investor conference. The gunman, identified as Luigi Mangione, waited in the area for about an hour before ambushing Thompson and fleeing through Central Park. Mangione was arrested five days later at a McDonald's restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on December 9.

Mangione pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges related to the killing on January 30, 2026. He was scheduled to go on trial for state murder charges on September 8, 2026, but his sentencing was set for December 18, 2026. However, on December 1, 2026, U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett barred federal prosecutors from seeking the death penalty against Mangione. On February 6, 2026, the judge ruled that prosecutors could use evidence from Mangione's backpack, but barred certain items taken before his arrest.

Mangione also pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges, admitting to targeting and killing Thompson. His lawyers immediately filed paperwork seeking to have the state murder case dismissed on double jeopardy grounds, as he had already been found guilty in the federal case.
