Lexus ES 350e Review: Is this the best electric executive car?

For business leaders and high-income professionals, an executive car should not only navigate through traffic but also make the journey more comfortable and productive. Motoring journalist Tim Barnes-Clay tested the Lexus ES 350e, a fully electric executive car, and found it to excel in this regard. Set in the sophisticated setting of Leonardslee House in West Sussex, the ES 350e prioritizes refinement, craftsmanship, and wellbeing, setting it apart from competitors such as the BMW i5 and Volvo ES90.

The ES 350e boasts a spacious interior with a 12.3-inch driver's display and a 14-inch LexusConnect touchscreen, all created with Lexus's "Clean Tech x Elegance" philosophy. This philosophy combines modern technology with traditional craftsmanship, resulting in a tidy dashboard and a luxurious cabin. The car's 2,950mm wheelbase creates ample cabin space, while its 5,140mm length provides a commanding presence on the road.

Navigating tight spaces like London's junctions and car parks was surprisingly easy due to the ES 350e's agility. Its electric powertrain is smooth and almost silent, making it ideal for quiet work or relaxation. The cabin also offers plenty of rear legroom, making it comfortable for working or resting while someone else is driving.

Powered by a 77kWh battery, the ES 350e delivers 221bhp through its front-mounted electric motor. It can reach 62mph in 8.0 seconds and has a top speed of 99mph. Although its acceleration is modest compared to some electric competitors, it is more about smooth and immediate power rather than raw performance. The car's electric range varies between 325 and 361 miles, depending on the specification, with a WLTP range of 357 miles and an energy consumption of 25.7 kWh per 100 miles. A 150kW DC charger can replenish the battery from 10 to 80 percent in around 30 minutes.
