An 'influencer' degree? Colleges bet on content creator major as critics question its value

Influencer careers are becoming a popular topic of discussion in the realm of higher education. Arizona State University (ASU) recently introduced a bachelor's degree in content creation, aimed at preparing students for careers in digital media. This program, offered through the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, includes specialized courses on podcasting, studio production, and on-camera presence.

However, the university is not the first to offer such a degree. Several other institutions, like Syracuse University, Quinnipiac University, and Colorado State University, provide minors in content creation, while St. Bonaventure University recently announced a major in the field.

Brooke Erin Duffy, a communication professor at Cornell University, believes these college programs signify a significant shift in how content creation is viewed. While social media influencers are often portrayed as young individuals who effortlessly reap substantial rewards, the reality is that content creation is a labor-intensive job that rarely pays well initially. Despite its growing popularity, the industry remains highly competitive, with brands spending significantly more than creators earn from sponsored content.

For many students, the appeal of a content creation degree lies in the potential for a lucrative career. However, the high costs associated with these programs, especially at prestigious universities, may not always translate into job opportunities. A degree in content creation can equip students with transferable skills in communications, marketing, and media production, making it valuable even for those who may not become viral influencers.
