Zelensky Says 5% of US Patriot Missiles Could Save Ukraine This Winter

President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged the United States to provide more Patriot interceptor missiles, stating that 5% of the current US stockpile would help Ukraine survive the winter, while 10% could lead to the destruction of all Russian ballistic missiles. The Ukrainian leader noted that Ukraine currently possesses only 1% of the Patriot interceptors needed, while Russia has significantly increased its monthly launches of ballistic missiles.

Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine's interceptor stocks have plummeted compared to last year, while Russia's monthly production has doubled. The shortage becomes particularly concerning as winter approaches, with Russia anticipated to intensify attacks on Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure. July was the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians since the beginning of the conflict in 2022, according to the United Nations.

Zelensky highlighted that Russian attacks now include several heavy bombardments each month, straining Ukrainian air defenses. The global shortage of Patriot interceptors has been exacerbated by the ongoing US conflict with Iran, where the systems have been employed against Iranian missile and drone attacks. Securing additional Patriot interceptors is a primary daily priority for Zelensky, who engages in negotiations with the US and other international partners.

He declined to disclose details of some negotiation efforts. Ukraine has also been discussing additional interceptors with European countries as US stocks remain limited. Zelensky remains uncertain about the prospects of Washington allowing Ukraine to manufacture Patriot interceptors under license, as the US initially offered such a license during a NATO summit but later withdrew the proposal.

US representatives have visited Kyiv to explore production possibilities, but no final agreement has been reached. Zelensky expressed hope for obtaining 5% of the missiles and securing US acceptance. He also mentioned recent discussions with US Vice President Joe Biden, although the specifics of the conversation were not disclosed.

Ukraine has presented new proposals for the US-led peace process, which has stalled recently, emphasizing the need for greater American involvement. Zelensky highlighted that Russian President Vladimir Putin does not appear ready to end the war and may seek to expand it, potentially targeting NATO members like the Baltic states.

He stressed that a ceasefire could provide Russia with time to rebuild its military and launch another invasion, underscoring the importance of security guarantees to prevent such a scenario.
