Marathi mandatory for cab drivers in Maharashtra?

The Maharashtra government is proposing a new rule that would make working knowledge of the Marathi language mandatory for taxi, autorickshaw and app-based cab drivers. This change, part of the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Rules, 2026, would apply to drivers and permit holders of autorickshaws, taxis and app-based motor cabs equipped with electronic meters.

If drivers fail to meet this requirement, their driving authorization could be suspended for up to three months, with a possibility of revocation after continued non-compliance. Drivers would be granted a one-month period to acquire the necessary Marathi skills, and would be given a reasonable opportunity to be heard before any revocation of their authorization.

The Marathi language requirement is intended to improve communication between drivers and passengers, and ensure safer and more convenient journeys. The proposed changes are expected to come into effect from August 15, 2026, following clearance from the law and judiciary department, and issuance by the home department under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
