US sends USS George Washington to Middle East as 9-month USS Lincoln deployment sparks crew-welfare crisis

The U.S. Navy plans to send the aircraft carrier USS George Washington to the Middle East to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln, whose deployment has surpassed eight months due to ongoing tensions with Iran. This rotation was anticipated before recent reports regarding the Lincoln's conditions, but it has drawn attention to the extreme strain of maintaining a carrier at sea for such an extended period.

The Lincoln has remained in the region for around 200 days, far exceeding the typical 30-to-45-day intervals between port visits.

Originally deployed in November, the Abraham Lincoln has been active in the Middle East, supporting combat operations and the broader campaign against Iran, including actions against Iranian ports. The prolonged absence of port visits poses significant challenges for the crew, affecting their mental and physical well-being.
