US senators demand inquiry into conditions aboard aircraft carrier deployed in Middle East

U.S. senators have called for an inquiry into the living conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been deployed in the Middle East for an unprecedented period. Senator Richard Blumenthal has written a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, accusing the Navy of ignoring the "widespread reports of shortages of basic supplies, water contamination, plumbing issues, deteriorating mental health, deck safety concerns" faced by the 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard the aircraft carrier.

Blumenthal voiced concern over the extended deployment, stating that the Lincoln has been at sea for over 250 days without coming ashore in over 200 days, setting a record for consecutive days at sea. Senator Ruben Gallego echoed Blumenthal's concerns, calling for an official oversight visit with the bipartisan Senate Delegation to investigate the alarming conditions.

Family members of sailors and Marines aboard the Lincoln have clashed with Navy leadership over the difficult circumstances, including food shortages, mental health crises, and attempted suicides. Some crew members have reported severe mental health issues, while others have threatened to jump off the ship. Gallego, a former active-duty service member, warned that the situation is becoming increasingly dangerous, particularly as the U.S. carries out an illegal war under President Donald Trump's leadership. The U.S. Navy has not yet responded to inquiries from AFP regarding the matter.
