(Picture: Bernama) The head of the Penang State Education Department, Mohamad Dziauddin Mat Saad, said that schools in areas where APU readings are unhealthy must halt all outdoor activities involving students.

The Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) showed an unhealthy APU reading of 107 at Minden station around noon, which then fell to moderate at 103 later that afternoon. By 3pm, the reading fell to 97, and as of 8pm, it was 96. In Balik Pulau, Serang Perai, and Serang Jaya stations, readings ranged from 84 to 95 - all considered moderate.

Mohamad Dziauddin also said he would hold a meeting with all principals and deputy principals tomorrow morning to provide the latest information and actions to take if the air quality or APU reading shows unhealthy conditions in Penang. He advised students to wear masks and drink plenty of water, while schools should refer to students who appear unwell and inform their parents or guardians immediately.

According to the guidelines for school management during haze events, schools must halt all student-related outdoor activities if APU readings exceed 100. If the APU reading exceeds 200, all schools in the area or region must close immediately, while if it exceeds 500, teachers and staff are not required to attend school. The guidelines also stipulate the reopening of schools depending on whether the APU reading is below 200 and shows a decreasing trend.
