Iran calls for compensation after Hormuz oil spill

Iran has called for compensation following an oil spill that has polluted the Strait of Hormuz, threatening the region's marine ecosystems. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated that all parties benefiting from commercial shipping through the strait have a legal and moral duty to address the environmental damage. Iranian preliminary evidence suggests a foreign bulk carrier is responsible for the spill, which began on August 3 when Iranian forces attacked the Minoan Pioneer in Omani waters.

The oil then drifted into Iranian waters, reaching the southern Qeshm island but having been largely cleaned up by Wednesday evening. About 32,000 square meters of coastal area and 90,000 square meters of water have been affected by the pollution. Sheena Ansari, head of Iran's Environmental Protection Organisation, blamed the damage on both regional energy consumers and those who have turned the region into a staging ground for military operations.

The US and some regional countries oppose Iran's plan to charge navigational fees from passing vessels to fund environmental protection services.
