PKR Youth urges government to restore BUDI95 fuel quota

PKR Youth has demanded the government restore the monthly fuel quota under the BUDI95 targeted fuel subsidy programme to 300 litres, following its reduction to 200 litres last April due to the Middle East conflict. PKR Youth chief Kamil Munim stated that while the reduction was initially a temporary measure, good policies must adapt to changing circumstances.

He proposed that if global oil prices drop and the country's fiscal position improves, the BUDI95 quota should be raised back to at least 300 litres per month, with additional support of up to 350 litres for those with higher mobility needs. Kamil, who serves as Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's political secretary, suggested that a targeted subsidy system does not require a one-size-fits-all approach, emphasizing the government's possession of data to identify diverse usage patterns.

He argued for a more responsive mechanism to economic conditions, suggesting periodic reviews linking the quota to global oil prices, fiscal health, and consumption patterns. The BUDI95 programme, initially introduced in October, allowed Malaysians aged 16 and above to purchase up to 300 litres of RON95 petrol per month at a subsidized price of RM1.99 per litre.

However, in March, the quota was cut to 200 litres as a short-term measure to manage the impact of the Middle East war.
