PKR Youth calls for targeted PTPTN debt relief, higher Budi95 fuel subsidy cap

AYER KEROH: PKR Youth chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim has urged the government to consider targeted debt relief for PTPTN borrowers who are unable to repay their loans. Kamil acknowledged that providing free education nationwide would be challenging due to the country's financial constraints, but suggested the eligibility threshold should be gradually expanded once the fiscal situation improves.

He emphasized that while those who can afford to pay should do so, a parent's poverty should not become a lifelong burden for a child. Kamil noted that free education initiatives are already taking place, such as Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari's decision to reduce PTPTN debts by 50% for 4,000 eligible students. He proposed that the monthly subsidised petrol limit under Budi Madani RON95 (Budi95) be restored to 300 litres if global oil prices ease and the government's fiscal position strengthens.

Kamil also suggested an additional allocation of up to 350 litres per month for groups with greater mobility needs, subject to eligibility criteria and data verification. He stressed that the proposal does not mean unlimited subsidies or abandoning fiscal discipline; rather, the subsidy mechanism should be more responsive to economic conditions and people's needs.
