Penang may advise schools to suspend outdoor activities if air quality worsens, says CM

George Town, Aug 13 - The Chief Minister of Penang, Chow Kon Yeow, has indicated that the state government may advise schools to suspend or postpone outdoor activities if the air quality in the region deteriorates. Although the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in Penang presently stand at moderate levels, the government is closely monitoring the situation.

The Chief Minister emphasized that any subsequent action would hinge on the API readings and the progression of the current circumstances. Upon officiating the R.A.C.E to Zero Penang edition event, Chow addressed inquiries regarding Penang's API readings, which had edged close to the 100 mark earlier in the day. He mentioned that postponing outdoor activities at schools could be a potential measure should air pollution escalate.

Chow mentioned that the state government is receiving updates from the state secretary and the Department of Environment (DoE) concerning air quality conditions. He stated that a formal statement would be issued at a later time, as the matter is intricate and challenging to elaborate on at the moment. As of 9 am today, air quality in 11 regions throughout the country was deemed unhealthy, with Sarawak reporting the greatest number of affected areas, according to the Malaysian Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS).

The sweltering weather across the region since last week has contributed to forest fires in Indonesia, with over 107,000 hectares affected, approximately double the area previously recorded.
