Penang may advise schools to suspend outdoor activities if air quality worsens, says CM

George Town, Aug 13 — Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow of Penang suggested the government could advise schools to suspend or postpone outdoor activities if the state's air quality deteriorates, according to a report. Currently, Penang's Air Pollutant Index (API) readings are at moderate levels. "Once the API readings escalate to more serious levels, we may need to issue instructions to cancel or delay specific activities," Chow told reporters after inaugurating the R.A.C.E to Zero Penang edition event.

The Chief Minister was reacting to queries regarding Penang's API readings, which had risen to the 100 mark earlier in the day. He mentioned suspending outdoor activities at schools as one potential measure if air pollution worsens. "Certain schools might have to postpone outdoor activities, among other things. We will address that when it reaches that point," he stated.

The Penang government is receiving regular updates from the state secretary and the Department of Environment (DoE) on air quality. Chow mentioned that a statement regarding the API readings in Penang would be issued later. As of 9am, air quality in 11 areas across the country was deemed unhealthy, with Sarawak reporting the most affected regions.

The hot weather across the region over the past week has exacerbated forest fires in Indonesia, with over 107,000 hectares affected, roughly double the previously recorded area.
