Andy Hall ordered to pay RM500,000 for defaming recruitment director

A migrant rights activist, Andy Hall, has been ordered by the Johor Bahru High Court to pay RM500,000 in damages for defaming R Muthusamy, the director of a foreign workers recruitment firm. The judgment was made in the absence of Hall, who was not present in court to defend himself. Muthusamy's legal team argued that Hall's accusations of bribery and corruption against him were baseless and caused significant damage to his reputation.

The court ruled that the allegations made by Muthusamy were serious enough to warrant the higher sum of damages. Additionally, Hall was ordered to pay RM100,000 in costs and to publish an apology in major print media, as well as on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Furthermore, the court imposed a restraining order on Hall to prevent him from publishing similar defamatory statements in the future.

The first suit was filed on April 12, 2022, where Muthusamy accused Hall of sending an email to over 40 recipients, including companies, government departments, and NGOs, alleging that he had offered to bribe Hall through a consultancy offer from a leading electronics manufacturing services company. Muthusamy also claimed that Hall had made inquiries about the cost of silencing him. In response, Muthusamy issued a letter of demand to Hall on February 14, 2022.

Hall's alleged defamatory statements were made in an article titled "See you in court: Hall dares libel claimant in Dyson force labour controversy," published by Focus Malaysia on February 17, 2022. Muthusamy contended that these statements were false and malicious, tarnishing his reputation both locally and internationally.
