Andy Hall ordered to pay RM500,000 for defaming recruitment director

In a recent court ruling, migrant rights activist Andy Hall has been ordered to pay a considerable sum of RM500,000 in damages to R Muthusamy, the director of Embun Karisma Resources. This decision was made by the Johor Bahru High Court after two defamation suits were consolidated and presented to the judicial commissioner, Noradura Hamzah. Hall, who was absent from the court proceedings, was found guilty of making defamatory statements against Muthusamy.

The director of the foreign workers recruitment firm had accused Hall of attempting to bribe him through a consultancy offer at ATA, a leading electronics manufacturing services company. Muthusamy also alleged that Hall had made inquiries about "how much it would cost to pay off or silence Andy Hall." In response, Muthusamy filed a letter of demand against Hall on February 14, claiming that the allegations made by Hall in an email and a subsequent article published in Focus Malaysia were false and baseless.

The court acknowledged the severity of the accusations, awarding Hall the higher side of the damages due to the serious nature of the alleged corruption and bribery. In addition to the substantial sum, Hall was ordered to pay RM100,000 in costs. Furthermore, the court imposed a restraining order on Hall, preventing him from publishing similar defamatory statements. He was also mandated to issue an apology to Muthusamy in major print media, as well as on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
