Xavi becomes first non-Dutch Netherlands coach since 1978

Experienced former Barcelona manager Xavi has been named the new head coach of the Netherlands, signing a four-year contract. The 46-year-old, who had a distinguished playing career with Barcelona and Spain, will make history as the first non-Dutch coach to lead the Netherlands since Austrian coach Ernst Happel stepped down in 1978.

Ronald Koeman stepped down as Netherlands manager after a last-32 loss to Morocco during the 2022 World Cup. Xavi expressed his excitement, stating, "I consider it a tremendous honour to become head coach of the Dutch national team." Growing up at Barcelona's academy and influenced by legendary coaches like Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels, Xavi identifies deeply with Dutch football.

Notable figures such as Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkaard, who guided him during his playing days at Barcelona, also left a significant impact on his coaching philosophy. Xavi's tenure will kick off against Germany in the Nations League on September 24, 2023. Although former Liverpool head coach Arne Slot had previously discussed the role, he decided to withdraw as he prefers club football as his next professional stage.

Xavi, who clinched three international titles while representing Spain, including their World Cup victory in 2010, retired in 2019 and initially managed Al-Sadd before joining Barcelona in 2021. This marks Xavi's return to management after a two-year hiatus since stepping down from Barcelona.
