Former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has been named head coach of the Netherlands national team, committing to a four-year contract that extends to the 2030 World Cup. Xavi, 46, becomes the Netherlands' first foreign-born head coach since Austrian Ernst Happel led the team from 1977 to 1978. Hailing from a footballing family, Xavi credits former Barcelona coaches Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkaard for shaping his development both as a player and a coach. His coaching career began in November 2021 when he took charge of Barcelona, leading them to the La Liga title in 2023 before his managerial retirement.

Xavi's return to management is driven by his appreciation for the Netherlands' football philosophy, particularly its emphasis on possession-based attacking play. Former Liverpool manager Arne Slot declined the position, preferring to remain in club football due to the day-to-day player involvement, which is less common at the international level.
