Xavi becomes first non-Dutch Netherlands coach since 1978

Former Barcelona manager Xavi has taken on the role of head coach for the Netherlands, marking a significant milestone as he becomes the first non-Dutch coach to lead the team since 1978. The 46-year-old, known for his stellar playing career with Barcelona and Spain, including a 2010 World Cup final victory over the Netherlands, will serve a four-year contract with the national team.

Ronald Koeman's abrupt resignation following a disappointing World Cup exit to Morocco paved the way for Xavi's appointment. Xavi expressed his excitement, noting his deep-rooted connection to Dutch football, influenced by Barcelona's influential coaches Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels.

Xavi's coaching career began at Barcelona's academy, with key mentors including Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkaard, who played pivotal roles in his development both as a player and a coach. He will make his debut with the Netherlands against Germany in a Nations League match on September 24. Former Liverpool head coach Arne Slot had expressed interest in the position but opted to step back, preferring a club football role instead.

Xavi's tenure with the Netherlands will be his initial managerial position since retiring from playing in 2019. He previously managed Al-Sadd in Qatar and led Barcelona to a La Liga title during his first season in charge.
