Tropical storm hits Tokyo area, leaving thousands without power before moving west

Tropical storm Chan-hom made landfall in the Tokyo area on Tuesday night, causing widespread damage and power outages. The storm, which weakened significantly after hitting southern Ibaraki prefecture, left thousands of homes without electricity and five people suffered minor injuries. By Wednesday morning, over 3,000 homes in Ibaraki and neighboring Tochigi prefectures were still without power, according to TEPCO Power Grid.

The storm also knocked down trees, including one in the upscale shopping district of Omotesando, though no one was injured. In Tokyo, commuter trains and flights continued to operate normally, but residents were warned of heavy rain and thunder throughout the day. The storm affected holiday travelers during Japan's "bon" Buddhist holiday week.

Earlier this week, typhoon Dolphin had caused widespread havoc in southern Japan, killing 10 people in the Philippines and causing flooding in China.
