Tropical storm hits Tokyo area, leaving thousands without power before moving west

Tropical storm Chan-hom made landfall in the Tokyo area Tuesday night, causing widespread power outages and damage across the region. The storm, which had sustained winds of 64 kilometers per hour, left thousands of homes without electricity and injured five people. As of Wednesday morning, over 3,000 homes remained without power in Ibaraki and Tochigi prefectures.

Chan-hom's impact was felt across Tokyo, with tree falls and disruptions to commuter trains and flights. However, major transportation systems remained largely operational throughout the day. The storm was particularly strong in southern Ibaraki prefecture, where it made landfall late Tuesday.

Forecasters warned residents in northern and western Japan to brace for heavy rain and thunder during the day. The storm's track carried it westward through central Japan on Wednesday, heading towards Wakasa Bay. Chan-hom's landfall marked the first time a storm or typhoon had made contact with Ibaraki since records began in 1951.
