Nanta opts out of next GE after 6 terms, eyes state seat

After nearly three decades serving as a Kapit MP, Alexander Nanta Linggi announced his decision to step down from the federal parliamentary seat in the upcoming general election. In a statement, he expressed his desire to transfer the reins of power to a younger leader in the federal government. While he will continue his political activities, Nanta clarified that he would not be defending the Kapit constituency.

If a new state seat opens up in Kapit for the Sarawak election, he may consider running for that position. Nanta, who currently serves as the Gabungan Parti Sarawak secretary-general, intends to redirect his focus towards state-level development, particularly in Kapit. He also expressed interest in contesting the proposed new state seat of Melekun, although the final decision depends on confirmation by the Election Commission.

Speaking on May 9, the six-term Kapit MP said it was time to pass the federal baton to a new generation of leaders. The chairman of GPS and Sarawak premier, Abang Johari Openg, stated that Nanta's intention to contest a state seat was his personal choice, and the matter would be addressed at the appropriate time.
