JPMC Nurses Protest in Karachi Over Alleged Violation of Seniority Rules

Nurses at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) in Karachi went on strike and halted patient services due to alleged breaches of seniority rules in hiring senior nursing officials, according to sources. The demonstration disrupted all planned surgeries for the day and significantly impacted services in intensive care units and wards.

A spokesperson representing the Young Nurses’ Association claimed the hospital administration disregarded the approved seniority list when appointing individuals to the positions of chief nursing superintendent and deputy/assistant nursing superintendent. The protest compelled JPMC leadership to meet with nurses' representatives shortly after.

Subsequently, the hospital administration issued another letter about the appointments aligning with the seniority list. Dr. Waqas Khan, JPMC’s spokesperson, confirmed that patient services were indeed affected by the protest, but he stated the situation was under control with the assistance of medical students and paramedical staff.

He also confirmed that a new letter was released following the meeting between hospital administrators and nurses' representatives.
