Gemini reaches 1 billion users as Google expands AI

Ryanair has inked a five-year cloud partnership with Google Cloud, expanding its use of AI across its operations, the airline announced on Wednesday. Europe's largest carrier, by passenger numbers, will integrate Google's Gemini AI tools and DeepMind models to manage crew scheduling and make operational decisions.

Under the agreement, Ryanair will deploy Google Workspace and Google Cloud services to its 35,000 employees worldwide. The airline aims to carry 300 million passengers annually by 2034, and the new dual-cloud strategy is intended to enhance infrastructure resilience alongside its technology partners.

Ryanair CEO Eddie Wilson stated that the partnership aligns with the airline's focus on efficiency and speed. The Irish airline will leverage Gemini Enterprise to create custom AI agents for automating decisions, optimizing crew scheduling, and minimizing disruptions. Additionally, Google DeepMind models, such as AlphaEvolve and WeatherNext, will support fleet operations and maintenance scheduling.

The financial details of the agreement were not disclosed. Google Cloud's vice president for the UK, Ireland, and Sub-Saharan Africa, Maureen Costello, emphasized that the deployment of generative AI at scale can help industry leaders scale securely, reduce operational costs, and redefine the travel experience.

The aviation industry has been increasingly adopting AI in customer service, operations, and maintenance, as reported by studies from aviation technology provider SITA and airline trade body IATA. Airlines are seeking to improve efficiency and reliability through these technological advancements.
