Ryanair signs five-year Google Cloud deal, expands use of AI in airline operations

Ryanair, Europe's largest airline by passenger numbers, has announced a five-year partnership with Google Cloud to expand the use of AI in its operations. The deal, announced on Wednesday, will see Ryanair deploy Google's Gemini AI tools and DeepMind models across its network. By leveraging Alphabet's Google Workspace and Google Cloud services, Ryanair aims to improve crew scheduling, make operational decisions, and support its goal of carrying 300 million passengers annually by 2034.

CEO Eddie Wilson highlighted the importance of a robust infrastructure to support the airline's growth. To achieve this, Ryanair will utilize a dual-cloud strategy, combining Google Cloud with Amazon Web Services, to ensure resilience and efficiency. The airline will employ Gemini Enterprise to create custom AI agents that will automate certain decisions, enhance crew scheduling, and minimize disruptions.

In addition to Google's AI offerings, Ryanair will also utilize DeepMind models, including AlphaEvolve and WeatherNext, to support fleet operations and maintenance scheduling. The financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.

Google Cloud's vice president for the UK, Ireland, and Sub-Saharan Africa, Maureen Costello, emphasized the benefits of generative AI in helping industry leaders scale securely, reduce operational costs, and redefine the travel experience. The aviation industry has been increasingly adopting AI in various areas, such as customer service, operations, and maintenance, to improve efficiency and reliability, as reported by aviation technology provider SITA and airline trade body IATA.
