China’s C919 jet makes first international commercial flight

Beijing's domestically produced C919 jet completed its maiden international commercial flight on Wednesday, marking a significant step towards the Chinese government's goal of challenging the global dominance of aerospace giants Boeing and Airbus. The narrow-body aircraft, manufactured by the state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) and operated by Air China, embarked on a flight from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, arriving at the Mongolian capital at 4.58pm GMT.

Despite not yet receiving approval from American or European regulators, the C919 jet, which has been touted as a potential competitor to Boeing's 737 or Airbus's A320, symbolizes China's aspirations to reduce its reliance on foreign technology and establish a presence in the global market. Passenger Hu Yuan expressed pride in flying an international route on a domestically produced plane, hoping that China's domestic aircraft will continue to improve in comfort and passenger experience, potentially surpassing Boeing and Airbus.

The C919 is assembled in China but incorporates components from various countries, including the United States. Initially introduced in May 2023, the C919 has been primarily utilized for domestic commercial routes and flights between mainland China and Hong Kong. The aircraft has also been showcased at major aviation events, such as the Singapore airshow in 2024, 2026, and the Dubai airshow in 2025.

COMAC has already ventured into foreign markets with its smaller C909 jets, accommodating 78 to 97 passengers.
