Vietnam's VinSpace taps SpaceX for first satellite launches

Vietnam's sole private space firm, VinSpace, has entered into an agreement with SpaceX to launch its inaugural satellites next year. These satellites will be carried aboard a 2027 mission as part of SpaceX's Transporter rideshare program, a service that enables multiple customers to share a single rocket and jointly bear the launch expenses.

VinSpace plans to engineer and manage the satellites independently, employing the missions to validate technology in orbit and lay the groundwork for forthcoming commercial offerings. VinSpace CEO Thu Vu emphasized the importance of dependable access to space in transforming satellite innovation into practical missions. The company has not disclosed the number of satellites it intends to launch, their specifications, or the monetary value of its contract with SpaceX, led by Elon Musk.

VinSpace was founded in November 2025 by Vingroup, Vietnam's largest privately-held conglomerate, established by Pham Nhat Vuong, Vietnam's wealthiest individual. Vingroup has been progressively venturing into technology domains such as electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, robotics, and aerospace. VinSpace aspires to evolve into a comprehensive aerospace enterprise, encompassing satellite design and fabrication, launch management, satellite operations, and space-based data services.

While Vietnam has been constructing its space capabilities for several decades, it remains a minor player in the global arena. The nation launched its initial telecommunications satellite in 2008 and a second one in 2012. The government has set a target of becoming a mid-tier space power in Southeast Asia by 2030, with satellite technology as part of a broader initiative to foster high-tech sectors.

In March, Vietnam inaugurated a substantial space science and technology center at Hanoi's Hoa Lac High-Tech Park, intended to bolster domestic satellite development and the utilization of space-based data. In April, Vietnam licensed SpaceX's Starlink for its maiden extensive trial of satellite internet, a service employing thousands of low-Earth-orbit satellites to deliver high-speed connectivity.
