Vietnam's Vinspace Taps SpaceX for First Satellite Launches

Vietnam's VinSpace, the country's sole private space company, has entered into an agreement with SpaceX to launch its inaugural satellites next year. These satellites will embark on a journey aboard a 2027 mission, utilizing SpaceX's Transporter rideshare program. This program enables multiple clients to share a single rocket, thereby reducing the expenses associated with launching satellites.

VinSpace intends to harness the mission for testing satellite technology in orbit, with the ultimate goal of establishing commercial services. CEO Thu Vu emphasized the importance of reliable access to space for transforming satellite innovation into operational missions. The specifics of the satellite count, their technical details, and the contract's monetary value remain undisclosed by VinSpace.

VinSpace was founded in November 2025 by Vingroup, Vietnam's largest private conglomerate, established by Pham Nhat Vuong, Vietnam's wealthiest individual. The conglomerate boasts diverse interests, ranging from real estate, retail, and tourism to healthcare and education. In recent years, Vingroup has progressively ventured into technology sectors, including electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, robotics, and aerospace.

VinSpace aims to evolve into a comprehensive aerospace enterprise, encompassing satellite design and manufacturing, launch management, satellite operations, and space-based data services. While Vietnam has been developing its space capabilities for decades, its presence in the global industry remains modest. The nation launched its inaugural telecommunications satellite in 2008 and a second one in 2012.

The government has set a target to become a mid-tier space power in Southeast Asia by 2030, with satellite technology viewed as part of a broader initiative to foster high-tech industries. In March, Vietnam inaugurated a substantial space science and technology center at Hanoi's Hoa Lac High-Tech Park, intended to augment domestic satellite development and the utilization of space-based data.

In April, Vietnam authorized SpaceX's Starlink for its initial extensive trial of satellite internet, a system employing thousands of low-Earth-orbit satellites to deliver high-speed connectivity.
