Ten nabbed in dangerous driving drone operation

Ten individuals - nine men and one woman - have been apprehended for hazardous driving after authorities employed drones for the first time during a crackdown near Kwun Tong Bypass. The suspects, aged between 25 and 51, were targeted in an operation that utilized drones for aerial surveillance and evidence gathering.

The police operation, spanning from August 3 to 10, saw the seizure of seven vehicles and three motorcycles. Senior Inspector Pun Chun-ho from the Kowloon East Traffic Department disclosed that certain arrested individuals were engaging in reckless speeding, frequently changing lanes at high speeds along the major highway bypass.

Inspector Pun highlighted that the deployment of drones has enhanced the police's enforcement capabilities, leveraging their flexibility, long-range capabilities, and wide coverage for aerial observations and command. In addition to drones, specialized stealth vehicles were strategically deployed to monitor target vehicles, collect evidence, and enforce the law.

Moreover, the footage captured by the drones served as crucial evidence, bolstering the police's investigative efforts. The use of drones also proved beneficial in terms of manpower, allowing officers to accomplish tasks without necessitating the deployment of a large number of personnel, aligning with the police's smart-policing approach.

In terms of legal repercussions, the maximum penalty for dangerous driving and speeding stands at three years' imprisonment and a suspended driving license.
