Ten nabbed in dangerous driving drone operation

In a recent crackdown near Kwun Tong Bypass, ten individuals, comprising nine men and one woman, were apprehended for engaging in dangerous driving. This operation marked the first use of drones by the police force for aerial patrols and evidence collection in the area. The arrested individuals, aged between 25 and 51, were involved in reckless speeding, weaving in and out of traffic at high speeds on the Kwun Tong Bypass, a significant highway.

Senior Inspector Pun Chun-ho from the Kowloon East Traffic Department revealed that the operation, which took place from August 3 to 10, resulted in the seizure of seven vehicles and three motorcycles. He praised the drones' advantages, including their flexibility, long-range capabilities, and wide coverage, which enhanced the police's enforcement efforts.

Pun explained that drones enabled high-altitude observations and aerial command, as well as the deployment of stealth vehicles at strategic locations to follow and gather evidence on target vehicles.

Furthermore, the police collected illegal activities captured by the drones as part of their evidence, bolstering their ability to gather legal proof. The deployment of drones also proved beneficial to the force by reducing the need for a large number of personnel, aligning with their smart-policing strategy. Under the law, the maximum penalty for dangerous driving and speeding is three years' imprisonment and a driving-licence suspension.
