Sion ROB reconstruction work achieves major milestone with successful launch of 500 Tonne Girders in just 6 hours

The reconstruction of the Sion Road Over Bridge (ROB) has reached a significant milestone with the successful launch of two 500-tonne semi-through steel girders. This achievement, accomplished within just two days, is a testament to the meticulous planning, detailed engineering and precise execution carried out by the Central Railway and the executing agency.

Both girders, weighing approximately 500 tonnes each and spanning 54.5 meters, were launched in separate night blocks, minimizing disruption to suburban train operations. The first girder was launched prior to the second, which took place during a specialized night corridor block between Matunga and Kurla. The complex process involved extensive preparatory work, including the erection of temporary trestles, hydraulic and winching systems, alignment checks and rigorous safety measures.

The girders were fabricated in Nagpur and assembled at the site on the east-end approach. With the successful launch of these massive steel structures, the project has transitioned into the next phase of deck slab construction, road approaches and associated works. Once completed, the new ROB will provide essential east-west road connectivity, substantially benefiting commuters and reducing the need for longer alternative routes following the closure of the old bridge.
